colby deal

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Colby Deal is a photographic artist whose work explores the cultural identity, resilience, and everyday life of underrepresented communities. A graduate of the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography, Deal employs both documentary and fine art photography to preserve the essence of Black and Brown neighborhoods that are often overlooked or at risk of erasure. His images, deeply rooted in personal and communal narratives, reflect the textures of urban environments, familial bonds, and the shifting landscapes of gentrification.

Deal’s dedication to storytelling and cultural preservation has led to significant recognition in the field of photography. He is a member of the prestigious Magnum Photos agency, an honor that places him among some of the most influential photographers in the world. His ability to capture the soul of a place has earned him opportunities such as exhibitions at the Houston Museum of African American Culture and permanent public installations, including a large-scale exhibit at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.

A recipient of multiple artist residencies, Deal has refined his practice at Project Row Houses and RedLine Contemporary Art Center, two institutions dedicated to fostering creative engagement and social impact. His work was also included in Vogue’s "Fashion Photography 100", marking his presence at the intersection of fine art and commercial imagery.

Deal’s impact extends beyond gallery spaces and into major international photography biennials. He was featured in FotoFest Biennial, one of the most influential photography festivals in the world, which showcases groundbreaking contemporary photography and lens-based art. His participation in FotoFest further solidified his role as a leading visual storyteller, bringing attention to themes of cultural heritage, urban transformation, and the lived experiences of Black communities in America.

In 2021, Deal was invited to participate in the Whitney Biennial in New York City, one of the most prestigious exhibitions for contemporary American artists. That same year, he published his first photography book with MACK Books, expanding his visual storytelling to a global audience. His ability to balance artistic vision with community representation has solidified his reputation as a photographer who not only documents history but also actively shapes conversations about culture, identity, and place.

Through his lens, Deal creates a visual archive of everyday Black life, exploring themes of legacy, memory, and belonging. Whether through printed works, large-scale public installations, or immersive exhibitions, his work continues to elevate narratives that demand to be seen, honored, and preserved.
